Just when you thought the insanity in this country had reached its limit.

I am frankly dumbfounded, amazed and down right gobsmacked by probation chief Heather Monroe’s comments in the Daily Mail today. Here is the text.

Criminals must be treated as  customers – not offenders, a probation service boss has insisted.

They should be invited to speak about their needs and asked how they feel about the treatment they receive, London probation chief Heather Munro added.

And these people should not have to spend time in shabby waiting rooms or be sent to dingy offices to be interviewed.

Giving criminals the same consideration a company gives its customers will steer them away from committing future crimes, according to Mrs Munro.

‘It’s a bit like running a business,’ she said.

‘Any business would ask its customers how it can improve its service. It just doesn’t make sense not to.’

The call for probation officers to make life more comfortable for offenders comes at a time of growing concern over the way their service deals with criminals under its supervision.

Last week judges criticised the Government’s plan to keep more offenders out of jail, citing worries ‘relating to occasional poor and ineffective monitoring and management’ of community sentences.

Around half of those given community punishments never finish them, and in London – where Mrs Munro’s service supervises 70,000 criminals a year – probation officers have a particularly poor record.

Lapses by staff were blamed for the decision to free violent career criminal Dano Sonnex from jail in 2008. He went on to torture and murder two French students.

Is it just me, or has this whole human rights,”poor little criminals” mentality gone beyond the remits of common reason and sense?  Treat them as customers?? My God what next? Commit one crime, get two free?  redeem this voucher for a family jolly in the Algarve with any mugging/assault or burglary,*offer  strictly one per customer. They are criminals..They have committed crimes, they are NOT victims. Get your mamby pamby head out of your  sanctimonious arse Mrs  Munroe and stop spewing forth such non sensical platitudes.

Yeah too right! prison’s too good for these little tykes they should suffer the same kind of abysmal customer service as the rest of us.

In this market driven world the penal service is just as much a business as any other, so calling drug dealers, murderers, thieves and rapists customers make as much sense as the NHS calling a cancer sufferer a customer or the benefits agency calling the unemployed customers. Dehumanising business-speak, but something we all have to deal with.

As to the question of prevention/redemption, that’s not going to be solved any time soon, we don’t cure crime by locking people up. I don’t know the correct balance of carrot and stick but I do know raw carrot is yummy crunchy and cocked carrot is extra-judicial torture. In summary: salad not porridge.
